Nobody ever wants to think about getting into a car accident, but the sad truth is that a car accident can occur at any time. Many factors can play a part in causing an auto accident, but many times, a driver's irresponsibility on the road can be the main culprit. Inattentiveness to the road ahead, such as talking on a cell phone, changing the radio station, or even eating, often lure away the driver's focus and lead to an accident. However, inattentive driving isn't the only cause for car accidents. Other common causes for car accidents are listed below:

Speeding

Statistics prove that speeding is also a major factor in car accidents. Speed limits are posted for a reason and are for ideal conditions. Traveling at even a few miles per hour over the speed limit can dramatically heighten your risk of being involved in a car accident.

Driving under the influence

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can impair your judgment and reflexes, which is why it is often a common cause of car accidents.

Drowsiness

Falling asleep behind the wheel is another common cause of car accidents. If you begin to feel drowsy while driving, it's important to pull off to a safe location to rest, even if it delays your travel schedule. Doing this can save your life and keep others out of harm's way.

Aggressive driving/road rage

Aggressive driving or “road rage” is a behavior that can lead to a car accident. Tailgating, blocking other drivers from changing lanes, and flashing your headlights at other drivers are all examples of aggressive driving.

Vehicle mechanical failure

Not all accidents are the driver's fault, however. At times, a mechanical failure on the automobile may be the cause of an accident. Faulty brakes or tires can cause a driver to lose control of the vehicle and lead to an accident.

Road and weather conditions

Poor weather or road conditions can easily contribute to a car accident. Reduced visibility due to fog and icy roads from freezing rain are just some weather conditions that drivers may face in their part of the country. Remember that speed limits are for ideal conditions, so adjust your speed accordingly during inclement weather conditions.

If you have been injured during a car accident, you should speak with a skilled personal injury attorney to help you determine if you can file a personal injury lawsuit.
